|| = || __ CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
The 73rd Calgary Christmas Bird Count goes next Sunday (15th Dec 2024). We will be birding in SAH starting from our place (1535 Windsor St.) at 9:00am Sunday and proceeding in a clockwise direction. Later we will do University Heights and U of C. If you would like to join us for all or part of the count you are very welcome — please let us know when or where you want to join us. Unusual birds seen between 12th and 18th Dec can also be added to the count list so forward a note with what you see.
Both a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Great Horned Owl have been seen in our part of the 'hood' lately which might account for the lack of small birds. I gather Gray Partridge have been quite common in the south side of the community but it's a while since I've seen any. Crossbills, Grosbeaks, Redpolls, Pine Siskins, Hairy Woodpeckers, Bohemian Waxwings and White Breasted Nuthatches have been quite rare in recent years so it would be good to get them back on our list.
Call on the cellphone if you see an unusual bird on Sunday (403 813 4457) or any other birds of interest in our area during the period 14th-20th December.
There are many other counts that occur this time of year within Alberta that would welcome help — you don't need to be an expert to participate as it is often non-birders that seem to see or hear the unusual birds. Contact us if you need further information.
Happy birding and the very best of the holiday season.
