One of our neighbours shared this info that happened today (Saturday):

“This feels like a movie plot, but parents please be aware and have a chat with your kids about safety…

On Saturday at approximately 12:30 in the afternoon a car approached my son and his friend (both young boys) who were waiting for another friend on 13th Ave between London and Kingston Street. The driver started to get out and offered them candy saying one of the boys “looks like my kid.”

Luckily both boys took a step back and said no as a neighbour father was coming back into his front yard and asked what was going on. The man retreated into his vehicle and rolled the window down partially and repeated that he was just offering chocolate to the one boy as he looked like his kid. The father questioned again and the driver drove away. Alberta plate possibly started with D. Driver was heavier set Asian male, possibly mid age driving a dark coloured sports car or sedan with heavily tinted windows. I believe it was an import car.

I will be filing a police report, but if anyone can check cameras for a vehicle driving the neighbourhood around that time that fits the description I’d love to review it to add to my report.

I walk our neighbourhood daily and have never seen this car before, and cannot fathom what could have happened if these boys didn’t step back, alongside the timing of the father returning to his yard. Please watch out for each other.”

Thank you to the kind neighbour who made sure the boys were safe. Thank you to the Mom who shared the story to make sure others stay safe. Hopefully we all can use this event as reminder to take a moment to teach our children to be careful - even when there is temptation.

A reminder also not to offer things to children you don’t know, even if your intentions are pure. Your actions teach them to trust even though we all know there are bad people in the world. The next person might not be trustworthy. We don’t care if you think they look similar to somebody else.

Stop! Just stop!

If you are not already on our email list (or Facebook page), please join and encourage neighbours to join as well. It's an easy way to stay up-to-date with all that's going on in and around the 'hood.
