|| = || __ BIKE SWAP

What is Alberta Bike Swap? The following is provided by the organizers:

We’re a non-profit that provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bicycles. If you have a bike to sell or want to buy a bike we’ll tech check that bike and run the serial number through the only bike swap software in the world (we designed the software, cool eh?).

In 2022 we had over 660 bike donations because we work with over 30 groups that recondition bikes for re-use. Please consider contacting us if you have an unused bike hanging in your garage and we’ll make sure that bike is re-cycled (pun intended).

We also support cycling proficiency training in Alberta through Alberta Bike Swap CAN-BIKE courses. CAN-BIKE is the only recognized cycling education program in Canada. Chris, the taller half of the bike swaps, is the only person in Alberta to have CAN-BIKE Master Instructor status and his courses are informative and educational.

We have Facebook pages for Alberta Bike Swap and Calgary Bike Swap and we’re also on Twitter and Instagram. We are only putting on events in Edmonton and Calgary now.

We added children's bikes to our swaps last year and we'll be swapping children's bikes from now on because it helps families.

|| = || __ BUM RUN

The following is provided by the organizers:

My name is Abisola Adegbulugbe and I am a research assistant in a Cancer Research lab at the University of Calgary.

This year my lab and I are helping to organize the second annual Calgary Bumrun. Bumrun is a charity organization, whose mission is to increase participation in screening programs to prevent colorectal cancer and to raise funds for charities that have a record of saving lives through promoting easy access to screening.

The Calgary Bumrun will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The 5K race will begin at 9:00am in front of the Cal Wenzel Precision Health Building (3820 Hospital Dr NW). There will also be a 500M little bumsrun starting at 8:40am for children 12 and under.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in Canada. Screening tests enable us to detect and remove precancerous growths from the colon before they progress to an advanced stage. The early detection of colorectal cancer is key to improving outcomes and preventing colorectal cancer deaths.

This year we are hoping to increase registration and participation from the local communities surrounding the Foothills Medical Centre.

|| = || __ SPEEDSKATING UPDATE

Below is a follow-up from Marc Poulin on the International Speed Skating events that his son, Max, and team mate, Darby, attended in Germany in February.

Note, Max competed in two international events that kept him in Germany for two weeks in February.

  1. Junior World Cup for Speed Skating

  2. Junior World Speed Skating Championships

Max and Darby posted photos on their Instagram accounts – see below.

Max had a great experience, and some good racing too. His best performance was in a team event called the Team Sprint. This consists of a team of three skaters that chases another team of three skaters. The teams start on opposite sides of the track. There were 10 teams, and they are seeded based on time. The race is three laps, and one skater/team drops off on each lap. The race is completed when the third and final skater of each team finishes the third lap. Max’s team shattered the Canadian Junior record, and missed a bronze medal by .2 seconds.

|| = || __ FLAMES MEMORABILIA

One of our neighbours found an item of Calgary Flames (hockey) memorabilia on the Toronto Cres hill. If you lost something in the last month or so, please contact us with a description. We are purposely not identifying exactly what it is to ensure it gets back to the rightful owner (who should be able to describe it). If you have lost an item, please send a message to the newsletter.

|| = || __ NEWSLETTER UPDATE

SAHCA has recently had some problems with our e-newsletter, which we are working to resolve. If we missed sending out something you needed to share, please update us.

Meanwhile, we intend to also produce a larger version (similar to the previous printed newsletter) soon. Like the printed one, the larger (once-per month version) will have regular columns on different topics of interest to residents.

If you were previously a contributor and would like to continue (or you would like to be considered for the new e-version), please send an email to the newsletter with your contact information and column topic.

This newsletter will be produced 10 times a year. Other news will continue to go out on an as-needed basis. Thank you!

If you are not already on our email list (or Facebook page), please join and encourage neighbours to join as well. It's an easy way to stay up-to-date with all that's going on in and around the 'hood.
