'HOOD WATCH

|| = || __ 'HOOD WATCH - CAR BREAKIN

One of our neighbours on 14th Avenue between London and Windsor had her vehicle broken into early this morning (November 23).

She had her car loaded for a 5am start as she had to drive to Lake Louise for work (btw, covering the World Cup Downhill Races for TV).

An Olympic duffel bag and a black duffel bag (pictured), both filled with women's winter clothes, were stolen. Her passenger back window was broken in the process of gaining access. Ironically, the vehicle also contained food items which were not taken.

If you you have property cameras that might have caught something, or you saw something suspicious (i.e. someone carrying duffel bags early this morning), please let us (or the police) know. Please also keep an eye out for anything that might have been discarded nearby from these duffel bags.

Constable Reinders (our Community Liaison Officer with the Calgary Police Service) has the following general advice for protecting your property (which we have committed to sharing regularly - though we recognize there are times you need to make exceptions):

At 9 PM, or before you go to bed, make it a routine to check the following:

  • Remove all valuables from your vehicles. Wallets, sunglasses and tablets are often left in the vehicle because we walk in with groceries, dry cleaning, while on the phone or dealing with kids. Please take a moment to check car doors and take all valuables out.
  • Close the overhead garage door. If you leave on holidays, please disconnect the garage door opener from the power outlet.
  • Lock all doors and don’t forget the main door to the garage, the shed and the cars.
  • Close all windows, especially if you opened windows to air the house. Don’t forget about basements.
  • Turn on an exterior light, or install flood lights or sensors.
  • If you go on vacation, please install timers on two lights in your living room, giving the appearance as if you were home. Ask the neighbours to check every few days for possible signs of break and enter - and make sure sidewalks are shovelled.

If needed, please contact our Community Police Liaison Officer:

  • secure their homes, garages, vehicles, yards and other belongings,
  • to install cameras and alarms where possible,
  • to report to police as needed, and
  • to watch out for each other.

We will continue updating on suspicious events in St Andrews Heights using the headline 'HOOD WATCH.
