|| = || __ YOUTH JUSTICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Youth Justice Committees are a community-based and volunteer operated alternative to court that gives young people a second chance after a bad decision. For over 25 years volunteers have helped youth in their own community to move through and past a minor offence by holding them accountable without holding them back.
EVERYONE NEEDS SOMEONE TO GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE. Will it be you?
Impact a young person’s life by empowering them to have a voice, increase their accountability, develop self-awareness, all with the goal of avoiding a formal youth record and developing positive relationships with adults in the community.
Help families by considering their needs as well, providing additional resources to address family difficulties and ensuring cases are handled expediently and efficiently.
Support victims by providing an opportunity to express how the crime has affected them and offer restitution, if applicable, to help repair the harm that was caused.
Improve the community by having a positive impact on reducing youth crime.
Your Commitment
- Be a Youth Justice Committee (YJC) Member for a minimum one year
- 9 hours of initial training (3 sessions over 3 separate evenings)
- Attend meetings where the young person and their family connect with the YJC volunteers. Number of meetings and time commitment is dependent on number of files received (approximately 1-3 files and 5-10 hours/month)
- Connect regularly with young person during the three-month period their file is active through texts, phone calls and zoom video conferencing
- Attend assigned YJC meetings (approximately 3 to 10 meetings per year for 1 hour depending on YJC) and All YJC Annual General Meeting (once a year for 2 hours)
- Attend valuable information and training sessions throughout the year
- Willingness to learn and be open minded
