We are looking for someone to fill our Secretary position.

The Secretary position requires approximately 2 hours of work per month, primarily note taking at our monthly board meetings and distribution of the monthly minutes.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the community and engage in various different initiatives in St. Andrew's Heights.

If you are interested in this position, please contact us at info@standrewsheights.ca
Can you recycle clothing, shoes and textiles? Yes!

As you start your spring clean, don’t put textiles in the garbage! There are many ways to keep clothing, shoes and textiles out of the City landfills.
  • Donate usable clothing and shoes to local charities or drop-off charity bins near you. Be sure to contact them first to find out what types are accepted. If the charity bin is full, don’t leave it outside - only materials in the bins are accepted. Instead, hang onto your donation or take it to another bin.
  • Recycle clothing and textiles for free at a City landfill, even if it’s damaged. Our Throw ‘N’ Go accepts a variety of textiles including outerwear, shoes, reusable shopping bags, purses and backpacks, and more. Just make sure fabrics are clean and dry and place items in a bag before dropping off. If you bring other garbage in your load, landfill charges will apply.
  • Repurpose old cotton shirts by cutting into rags for household chores such as cleaning or automotive work. Textiles also make great projects and crafts with many patterns available online: sew quilts from denim and flannel, handkerchiefs from old t-shirts, or cushion covers from curtains.

Not sure how to properly dispose of an item? Visit calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere for answers to hundreds of items.

Weekly green cart returns end of April

Weekly green cart pickup is returning at the end of April. Visit calgary.ca/collection to check your schedule and sign up for reminders, or download the Calgary Garbage Day app.

Here are some tips for using your green cart:
  • All food scraps, food-soiled paper, pet waste and yard waste go in the green cart.
  • Use only certified compostable bags or paper yard waste bags in your green cart – no plastic bags.
  • Always fill your green cart first, then fill paper yard waste bags. Roll tops of bags closed and set at least two feet to the side of your green cart.
  • No plastic plant pots or bedding trays in the green cart. Rinse out and recycle in your blue cart instead.

Compost giveaway: Compost will be available for pickup, by appointment only, from May 10 to June 26. For details visit calgary.ca/compost.

COVID, Vaccination & Economic Recovery

Alberta’s government is back in session with the introduction of Budget 2021 and a continued focus on supporting Albertans through COVID-19 and Alberta’s Economic Recovery Plan.

The global health crisis, economic recession and low oil prices have had a significant impact on the health of Albertans, our economy and the provincial budget.  The Government of Alberta’s commitment remains on protecting lives and livelihoods.   This means focusing on vaccination roll out, protecting our hospital capacity and the most vulnerable, and getting Albertans back to work.  In order to support Albertans through these challenging times, it will be necessary to run another high deficit this year.  Given these costs will be passed onto future generations, it is even more important to manage your dollars responsibly while delivering key services.

Alberta’s Recovery Plan along with reducing regulatory red tape for businesses and in bringing overall spending in line, we will see Alberta’s economy gradually emerge from this downturn.

I am optimistic that the Alberta government will continue to implement policies this session that will see our economy continue to move in the right direction and we will still have the government services we depend and rely upon.

International Women’s Day – Choose to Challenge

I want to take a moment to recognize International Women’s Day on March 8.  This day is of significant importance to me, not only as a human resource professional, but as a father to three daughters and being the MLA for the University of Calgary.

I see a future for my daughters and all women that is equal and allows them to become anything they challenge themselves to do.  This year’s theme is Choose to Challenge.  There is no better time for this theme as the world emerges from this past year and the challenges that we have all faced.

On March 5th I am proud to join women in leadership roles who will engage in a conversation of their experiences, challenges they have had to overcome and where they see the future for women leaders.

As always, if you need to get in touch with me on any provincial issue or have questions, please feel free to reach out to my office at Calgary.Varsity@assembly.ab.ca.

Foothills Athletic Park Redevelopment Engagement

The City, in partnership with the University of Calgary, is creating a Concept Plan for the future development of the Foothills Athletic Park and McMahon Stadium lands. The first round of public engagement is open online now.

There is tremendous potential to reimagine this site as a walkable, mixed-use, and transit oriented community that is much better connected to its surrounding communities and to the University of Calgary. While sport and recreation facilities are major considerations for the project, I encourage feedback that thinks beyond just a new field house and a refreshed McMahon Stadium.

For more information on this project and to provide your feedback, please visit:

Message from Druh Farrell:

To My Constituents,

In October of 2001, the residents of Ward 7 first elected me to represent them at City Hall. Over the past 20 years, I worked tirelessly to shape our city for the better. Today I am announcing that I will not be seeking re-election.

I was born and raised in Calgary. My beloved city has changed immensely over my lifetime but the fundamentals have stayed the same. While the skyline has been altered beyond recognition from when I was a little girl in Cambrian Heights, Calgarians are, and will always be, the hardworking, loyal, and community-minded people who make our city special.

This has been the most fulfilling career anyone could ask for. When friends and neighbours come together to create a community where there is room to grow and to thrive, we are all better for it.

Calgary has gone through many great times and a fair number of rough patches. But an irrepressible spirit is our lifeblood. The curiosity, audacity, and determination of Calgarians have driven us forward time and time again. And we need this spirit now more than ever.

We worked together to build flood infrastructure to protect our communities, and for the complete transformation of East Village. We created a place of beauty on St. Patrick’s Island where families have gathered for generations in a place the Blackfoot people call Moh-kin-stis. We built the dazzling Central Library to help all Calgarians learn and explore. There is a certain joy seeing the work come about. I love to linger on the Peace Bridge with the throngs of people enjoying live music. It makes me smile when I walk through the Ward 7 communities and see all the community gardens and little free libraries.

Curbside recycling, climate action, revitalizing our main streets, improved walking, safer cycling, better transit, more accessible neighbourhoods, and affordable housing – not one of these projects was easy. Some of them were downright unpopular at the time. But I believed, along with my constituents, the amazing Ward 7 team, and my Council colleagues, that they would help us build a great city for the future.

I never shied away from making tough decisions and I always stayed true to my principles. My touchstone is to be a good ancestor, guided always to make our city kinder, stronger, and more resilient for future generations. It has been the honour of a lifetime to serve the people of Calgary and to strive for a more just, more equitable, and more forward-thinking world.

We face a challenging time in Calgary. I hope the next generation of leaders looks to the future and not to the past. To those leaders, I hope you embrace our diversity of people and ideas. I hope you create a space for collaboration, not division. I hope that you govern as servant leaders, with integrity and humility. And, more than anything, I hope that you are brave in the decisions you make.
March in Fish Creek Provincial Park
Living and Working with Beavers in Fish Creek!

Thanks to the financial support of Alberta Environment and Parks’ Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program, the Friends spearheaded our first ever Beaver Coexistence Project in 2020, with the aim of mitigating the negative impacts of beaver activity and raising awareness about the positive effects of beaver activity on the environment. The Fish Creek Beaver Coexistence project also featured 11 tours for public, partners and land managers from other jurisdictions, three beaver-focused Fish Creek Speaker Series presentations and seven pop-up outreach stations, engaging over 1,400 individuals so far. The work will continue in 2021, with plans to host another event, similar to the 2020 Living with Beavers event, more pop-up outreach and a video showcasing the project. A huge thank you to all who are helping to transform the societal narrative around beavers into one of coexistence: Friends of Fish Creek Volunteers and project partners such as AEP, Miistakis Institute, Cows and Fish, Canadian Conservation Corps, You Betula Environmental, Humane Solutions, Ruby Eaglechild and the City of Calgary.  We are excited to continue this work and hope to see you at a tour or outreach table in the park this year! For more information about the Beaver Coexistence project in Fish Creek stay tuned to https://friendsoffishcreek.org/beavers

Volunteer Opportunities in Fish Creek Provincial Park

The 2021 volunteer season is just around the corner, and we are looking for people to assist with a variety of programs. Opportunities are available for longstanding programs like Park Watch, Weed Whackers, and Riparian Monitoring Stewards, as well as for new programs kicking off this year!

Beaver Coexistence Flow Control Device Monitoring and Maintenance Program:  Volunteers in this program monitor these installations to ensure they are diverting water as intended and correct any issues that arise.

ReWilding Site Monitors: Monitor restoration sites and take notes using the ArcGIS digital app. Maintenance tasks could include adding additional tree cages, pruning, weeding and more!

Weed Watchers: Invasive weeds are pervasive throughout Fish Creek, and we need help to locate and remove them!

Fish Creek Ambassadors: Fish Creek Ambassadors will be volunteering in the Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Centre providing information about Fish Creek Provincial Park, and the Friend’s programs, as well as gathering information and data about how people use the Visitor Centre.

Stewardship Truck Crew: With the addition of our stewardship truck, we will need helping hands to ensure our ReWilding sites are maintained, whether it be watering or fence maintenance.

The Fish Creek Community Terrace

Every brick tells a story and we invite you to leave a lasting legacy in Fish Creek Provincial Park by dedicating a brick along the Fish Creek Community Terrace. People have dedicated bricks to show their support for this park and to commemorate milestones like weddings, anniversaries, new family members, or memorials for those who have passed on. The Fish Creek Community terrace will be installed in front of the Cookhouse near the kiosk. Inscriptions can have 2 lines of text with 16 characters per line, and simple shapes like hearts and circles can be accomplished. Bricks are only $250 and you will receive a tax receipt for your contribution. If you have a local business, consider having a brick inscribed for your business - it's great advertising in a very busy area! For more information, contact the Friends or visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/brick

2018 Amastuola Primitivo, Puglia, Italy (www.amastuola.it)

About Sustainability: Italy’s largest organic vineyard. Certified organic by Bioagricert ®.

About Price: C$24

About the Region: Forming Italy’s heel, Puglia (Poo-lee-ah) is a relatively flat region that separates the Adriatic from the Gulf of Taranto. It was inspiration to the late Patricia Gray, whose culinary thoughts, Honey From a Weed, remains an in-season/local ingredient/foraging, cult-classic. Producing 40 per cent of Italy’s olive oil supply, Puglia is also the centre of Italian baseball, and home to the Taranto Tritons baseball dynasty. The ancestral home of the Tarantino family, son Quentin has made his mark in American film.

About Terroir: Hot, dry summers and mild, slightly damp winters qualify the region’s climate as warm Mediterranean. Located at 210 metres in the rolling slopes of the karst Murge Plateau. Amastuola’s vines root into its mineral-rich, red clay-silt soils. The cooler temperatures at altitude assist with proper grape development, limiting alcohol levels and enabling desired acidity.

About the Winery: Fifteen kms. north of Taranto, Amastuola sits just outside the Terra della Gravine Nature Reserve. Its vineyard, designed by architect Fernando Caruncho, is a stunning landscape of geometric vineyard waves rolling over the distance. Comprising 170 hectares, 14 local and international varietals grow amid 24 stands of 800-year-old olive trees. The winery building, an archeological marvel, is a restored 15C Italo-Greek Abbey.

About the Grape: DNA analysis has determined Primitivo to be the ancient Croatian grape, Crljenak Kašteljanski (just like it’s spelled…”Tse-rel-Nak  Kash-tel-yan-ski”). The signature red of Puglia, it has thrived in southern Italy since the 1700s, migrating to North America a century on, as California’s signature grape Zinfandel.

About the Wine: Not one’s typical dark/jammy Primitivo, Amastuola pours a pale ruby red.  Aromatic red fruit aromas blend with cinnamon and the slightest hint of kerosene. The crisp, medium-bodied palate reminds of red apple, blood orange and allspice. The finish is long and slightly grippy. Drinks well now, but will improve with cellaring.

About Pairing: Bombette Pugliese, spit-roasted piglet, eggplant parmigiana, fennel sausage and potatoes.

About Alcohol Level: 14% abv

About Availability: Check liquorconnect.com (call the listed store too) confirming availability.

The Guidebook for Great Communities

On Monday March 22, this document is going to City Council for a public hearing. This policy document will apply to inner city and established communities (St Andrews Heights included). It will be combined with a multi-community Local Area Plan (our grouping is the surrounding area currently covered by the South Shaganappi Communities Area Plan along with Banff Trail).

The main contentions are the lack of adequate consultation and the allowing of narrow houses and duplexes in our R-1s area.

Thank you to Gwen, our membership co-ordinator, and her delivery volunteers, for initiating this year's membership drive. While there is a lot of confusion around where your dues go this year, please remember your annual dues work towards the betterment of the community, even in these restricted times.

During COVID-19, we have recreated our website, set up electronic processes and have commenced work on revamping our community hall. Your dues contribute to funding outdoor facilities such as the tennis courts and the skating rink, especially with their recent heavy use in the pandemic. Fees also help to cover our annual financial reporting obligation (audits) required by the province to maintain our society status.

To date, we have received approximately 43% of household dues.

Fees:
Family: $25/year
Senior: $15/year

If you have not had a chance to pay your membership dues, there are now multiple options for doing so.

1. Please write a cheque with your name, address and type of membership (family or senior) and deposit at the hall.
2. Please write a cheque with your name, address and type of membership (family or senior) and contact info@standrewsheights.ca for pick up
3. Please send an eTransfer, (password: Gwen20) to membership@standrewsheights.ca

Thank you for supporting our community.

We are excited to announce SAHCA is in the process of applying for grants through the City and the Province to renovate our community hall. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

The community hall will remained closed at this time in light of the current COVID-19 restrictions.
We are continuing to monitor COVID-19 related restrictions on children's activities and team sports.  As most of you are likely aware, the expected relaxations of the restrictions set to occur on February 8th will still not allow for any team sports.  There is still some hope that matters will improve sufficiently quickly to allow for us to enjoy a 2021 season, but we're certainly not there yet.  We will continue to monitor the restrictions (and what is and is not allowed) and send out a future notice when we know more.  Hopefully that notice will be announce that we can proceed with registration!
